Sierra's Homeworld set the bar very high
for 3D Space Real Time Strategy Games but the developers
at Super X Studios looked at that bar and dismissed
it out of hand. Far Gate, by far, exceeded all my
expectations when I first started the game. In fact,
after getting over my initial reaction of, "Oh no,
another Homeworld wanna-be," I quickly learned that
this game was not to be judged quickly. In fact, the
more I played the deeper I was sucked into the game
and the more I began to realize that this game set
itself apart by it's sheer depth of story and action.
Far Gate starts you out slow with a tutorial
mission which lets you familiarize yourself with the
games controls, which turn out to be easy to use and
very useful in the gameplay. For instance, you can
zoom in on any ship, friend or foe, and have a chase
camera view of it. You set up different squadrons
of ships to command as a group with a few simple clicks
of the mouse.
You also get to familiarize yourself with
the Heads-Up Display, which consists of four panes,
one on each side of your screen. These panes are amazingly
unobtrusive during gameplay as they slide back away
from the center of the screen when you are not using
them. From these panes you can give orders such as
auto attack or tow another ship.
Unlike it's sibling, Homeworld, Far Gate's space
is full of many different objects and obstacles. Every
map in the game encompasses a whole solar system with a
sun, planets, asteroids and wormholes.
